Even when I was playing Jazz I was not particularly attracted to the Blues, but rather to more beautiful melodies such as the many "caught" by Gershwin. I think that unconsciously, Gershwin was searching for the Jewish nigun.
Before writing Porgy and Bess, he contemplated composing an opera about the Dybbuk.
After all, isn't Summertime a Jewish nigun?
